San Bernardino Massacre

I saw early reports of the attack at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino about half way through my work shift yesterday. As is typical in these types of incidents, speculation was all over the place. It’s still the middle of the night in California as I write this, but facts are starting to replace guesses.

WFLA is reporting via AP:

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — A heavily armed man and woman dressed for battle opened fire on a holiday banquet for his co-workers Wednesday, killing 14 people and seriously wounding more than a dozen others in a precision assault, authorities said. Hours later, they died in a shootout with police.

San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan identified one dead suspect as Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, the other as Tashfeen Malik, 27, his wife or fiancee. Burguan said Farook was born in the United States; the chief said he did not know Malik’s background.

The couple reportedly left their 6 month old child with relatives before initiating the attacks. The level of apparent preparation makes it hard to imagine that this was a spontaneous attack.

A law enforcement source told Fox News that the couple were each carrying an AR-15 rifle and and a pistol when they were shot and killed by police after a brief chase in their black SUV about 2 miles from the initial shooting site. The source said the vehicle also contained so-called “rollout bags” with multiple pipe bombs, as well as additional ammunition. The couple also had GoPro cameras strapped to their body armor and wore tactical clothing, including vests stuffed with ammunition magazines.

“That’s a military tactic for a sustained fight,” the source told Fox New of the rollout bags.

Unless information is discovered to the contrary, I believe that this quote from the Fox News story linked above is key: “They came prepared to do what they did, as if they were on a mission,” San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said.

Ken Matthews, commenting on a post on his Facebook page, is exactly right, “the only thing more tragic than this attack will be the politically correct way it’s described.”
