No Love for Lovie

A head coaching job in the NFL is shakier than Bernie Sanders grasp of economics, but the latest coaching change is still a bit of a surprise.

So it was a shock when, at 10:21 p.m. ET on Tuesday, the Buccaneers tweeted out the news that Smith was fired after just two seasons with the team.

Smith’s first season with the Buccaneers was awful, as a talented roster sunk so low it went 2-14 and got the No. 1 pick. But that pick turned into quarterback Jameis Winston, who helped the Buccaneers improve to 6-10 this season. Things were looking up for the Buccaneers and Smith, or so it seemed.

The Buccaneers are an intriguing team. Winston had a good rookie season and the future looks bright for him. They have some elite players like David, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy and receiver Mike Evans, and there are other good young players elsewhere on the roster. The Buccaneers also have the fourth-most cap room going into the offseason, about $52 million based on a projected $150 million cap according to

Smith seemed like he’d get a chance to develop those players and build a winner, but the Buccaneers surprised everyone on Tuesday night and decided to move in a different direction.

Smith seemed to be popular with fans, and more importantly his players. On the other hand nothing, and no one, is as popular as winning. I’m guessing that Lovie will find a bit of love with another team soon.

Things that leave me flat

There are things in life that don’t upset you or make you angry, they just leave you flat. Here is a list of things that left me flat this weekend.

  • The Eagles losing to the Bucs. Some defense would have been nice.
  • Jeff Gordon coming in third in the NASCAR chase. A good finish to an outstanding career, but it could have been a Hollywood ending. See, not upsetting just not what it could have been.
  • My car. Yep, my car. I went out to my car while I was at lunch yesterday and found that my right front tire was flat. So was the donut. Thanks to my co-worker, Yavet, for giving me a ride home. Now I have to go get a tire before I go to work today.

Hope you had a great weekend.

jeff gordon pit crewHey, these guys are free now. Care to give me a hand?

UPDATE: Tire taken care of. Sure could have used a pit crew. Took a lot longer than I would have liked and I smashed the bit of skin between the thumb and index finger. Hurt like crazy and bled like a faucet. Good thing I’m so tough.

Football Sunday…Oh, Wait

eaglesbucsAh, Sunday. Time to relax and watch a little football. I grew up in South Jersey just outside of Philadelphia, and have been a loyal Eagles (Phillies and Flyers too) fan for as long as I can remember. Having moved around a bit I do occasionally share some of that loyalty with the local team, sort of like a substitute to watch on bye weeks and such. Being the fan of an out of market team can be difficult. While the Bucs are my local backup, it’s a bit frustrating to have the Eagles game bumped for the local game.

Well today it’s easy. The Eagles host Tampa Bay at 1:00. I’ll be kicking back with some snacks and an A&W cheering on the guys in green.

Oh, wait…
